Snyder Fire District
The Snyder Fire District is located within the Town of Amherst, a first-ring suburb of the City of Buffalo, New York. It is a suburban community, approximately 6 square miles in size with a population of approximately 20,000 people.
While considered a residential community there is a substantial quantity of commercial development. Operations are carried out from one central station that houses all the apparatus and administrative offices.
The main governing body of the Snyder Fire Department is referred to as the Snyder Fire District. It is a political subdivision of the State of New York and is governed by a five-member Board of Fire Commissioners elected by residents of the Snyder Fire District.
New York State General Municipal Law governs the actions of the Board of Fire Commissioners. It is the responsibility of the commissioners to administer these laws and to provide fire protection and fire prevention in a manner adequate to the needs of the district. This is accomplished through its agent, the Snyder Fire Department.
The fire district owns the fire station and provides all the equipment and apparatus necessary for firefighters to perform their duties. The funds required to provide all the equipment, training, maintenance, etc. are raised by taxing the real property in the Snyder Fire District. Similar to a school board, the fire district sets the tax rate and the Town of Amherst collects the tax money and turns it over to the Board of Fire Commissioners to administer.
Over the years, the Board of Fire Commissioners has continued to provide members of the department with the most modern and up-to-date equipment available as well as offer the opportunity to obtain current and in-depth training and education wherever available.
