Snyder Fire District
The Snyder Fire District is a political subdivision of the State of New York. The district is governed by a five-member Board of Fire Commissioners elected by residents residing in the Snyder Fire District. The Snyder Fire District was formed on October 29, 1915. A meeting was held at the Snyder schoolhouse and the first five fire commissioners were appointed to five-year terms.
The actions of the Board of Fire Commissioners are governed by New York State General Municipal Law. It is the responsibility of the fire commissioers to administer these laws and to provide fire protection and fire prevention in a manner adequate to teh needs of the district. This is accomplished through the District's agent - the Snyder Fire Department.
Under the law, the Board of Fire Commissioners is obligated to oversee and control the activities of the fire department. The Snyder Fire District owns the fire station and provides all the equipment and apparatus necessary for firefighters to perform their duties. The funds needed to provide the equipment, training, maintenance, etc. is raised by taxing the real property in the Snyder Fire District. Expenses are anticipated each year and listed in an annual budget which is submitted to the Town of Amherst. The town collects the taxes and turns the funds over to the Board of Fire Commissioners to administer.
The following is a list of the individuals who have served as Fire Commissioners for the Snyder Fire District and the years they held office.
