1957 Ward LaFrance Ladder Truck
Help us restore this historical treasure!

Originally designated as Snyder Truck 1, the 1957 Ward LaFrance Ladder Truck had a legendary career in Snyder for close to 20 years, responding to fires in the district as well as other parts of the Town of Amherst and Erie County. The truck was delivered to the Snyder Fire Department in March 1957 and is recognized as the first aerial ladder in the Town of Amherst. Additionally, the Ward LaFrance was the first aerial ladder owned by a volunteer fire department in Western New York. The apparatus features a 75-foot mid-mounted ladder.
The truck was originally purchased by the Snyder Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners for $34,955 from the Ward LaFrance Truck Corporation in Elmira Heights, NY.
The Ward LaFrance remained in service in Snyder until 1976, when it was then sold to the Cuba Fire Department in Alleghany County where it served for almost 20 years. Following the truck's nearly 40 years of meritorious service, the truck was sold to a private collector.
Recognizing the historical and nostalgic value of the vehicle, in August 2004 the 1957 Ward LaFrance ladder truck was bought by the Snyder Fire Department. The truck arrived back home in Snyder, NY on September 17, 2004, where its storied career began.

Restoration Efforts

Following the return of the 1957 Ward LaFrance truck, a committee was formed to focus on the vehicle and its restoration. The truck is currently roadworthy and in working mechanical order. The committee is now focusing on the next steps of the restoration process, repairs to the apparatus body work, paint, and the aerial ladder. The department uses the ladder truck for community events such as parades and fire prevention events to highlight firefighting history.
The 1957 Ward LaFrance ladder truck is a true local historical gem. Its long, and storied legacy is being preserved for future generations. With your help, we can continue to bring this truck back to its former glory!
